Name Numerology: Turning the Letters of Your Name Into Numbers

Numerology 7 min read
Numerology letter chart with the numbers 1 to 9 above the alphabet

The short answer

Name numerology turns the letters of your full birth name into numbers, using the Pythagorean chart, which numbers the first nine letters 1 to 9 and starts the count again at J. Adding all the letters gives the expression or destiny number, the vowels give the soul urge, and the consonants give the personality number.

This guide walks through the method by hand, so you can check any calculator's result yourself. It covers the letter chart, a worked example, what each number is read as, master numbers, which name to use, and how name numbers are compared for compatibility or a business name.

How Name Numerology Works

Pythagorean numerology, the standard Western system, assigns each letter a value from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order. A is 1, B is 2 and so on until the ninth letter takes 9; then J starts again at 1, and S starts the third round. Every letter of a name therefore carries a single digit, and those digits are added and reduced to describe different layers of personality.

Reduction means adding the digits of a total until a single digit remains, so 31 becomes 3 plus 1, or 4. The exceptions are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which most traditions keep unreduced when they appear as a total. Some practitioners also flag the karmic debt numbers 13, 14, 16 and 19 when they show up just before the final reduction.

The full name on your birth certificate is the standard starting point, because numerology regards it as the name you were given before you had any say. Current names, nicknames and married names are read as additional layers, covered further down.

The Three Name Numbers and How to Calculate Them

Three numbers come from the name. Each uses the same letter values from the chart on this page; they differ only in which letters you count.

Y is the usual sticking point. Many numerologists count it as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound, as in Lynn or Mary, and as a consonant when it does not, as in Yolanda. Whatever rule you choose, apply it consistently, and note that your expression number comes out the same either way because it counts every letter.

  • Expression (destiny) number — all letters of the full birth name, read as natural talents, abilities and the direction you tend to develop in.
  • Soul urge (heart's desire) number — the vowels only, read as inner motivation and what you want most.
  • Personality number — the consonants only, read as the side of you others see first, before they know you well.

A Worked Example

Take the sample name Ella Stone. ELLA is 5 + 3 + 3 + 1 = 12, and STONE is 1 + 2 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 19. Reducing each name separately, 12 becomes 3 and 19 becomes 10 and then 1, and 3 + 1 gives an expression number of 4. Adding all the letters at once gives 31, which also reduces to 4.

For the soul urge, take only the vowels E, A, O and E: 5 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 17, which reduces to 8. For the personality number, take the consonants L, L, S, T and N: 3 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 5 = 14, which reduces to 5. A handy check is that the vowel total and the consonant total, 17 and 14, add up to the full-name total of 31.

Reducing name by name matters most when a master number is involved, since one method can produce 11 or 22 where the other passes straight through to 2 or 4. A common convention is to reduce each name first and keep any master number that appears at the final step.

5 E, N, W
6 F, O, X
7 G, P, Y
8 H, Q, Z

What Each Name Number Is Read As

The same meanings apply whether a number is an expression, soul urge or personality number; the position tells you which layer of life it describes. One is read as independence and initiative, 2 as cooperation and sensitivity, 3 as expression and creativity, 4 as structure and steady work, and 5 as freedom, change and curiosity.

Six is read as responsibility, care and home, 7 as analysis, solitude and the search for deeper answers, 8 as ambition, management and material goals, and 9 as compassion, completion and a broad, humanitarian outlook. In the example above, an expression of 4 points to a builder's temperament, a soul urge of 8 to an inner drive for achievement, and a personality of 5 to a lively, adaptable first impression.

Master numbers intensify their root digit. Eleven is read as heightened intuition and inspiration, 22 as the master builder who turns large visions into practical form, and 33 as the master teacher devoted to compassionate service. Because they are demanding, many numerologists read them as potentials that develop over time rather than traits present from the start.

Which Name to Use, and What a Name Change Means

The core numbers come from the birth name, spelled exactly as recorded and including middle names. Leaving out a middle name or using a nickname changes the result, which is why calculators ask for the full name.

A name you use now, such as a married name or a chosen name, is read as an added layer rather than a replacement. Practitioners often compare its expression number with the birth-name expression to see which qualities the newer name brings forward. Picking a name for its number is a personal decision: numerology describes the qualities associated with a number, and it cannot promise any result.

Name Compatibility, Business Names and Your Birth Date

Name numerology compatibility compares two people's name numbers, usually the expression and soul urge. One popular scheme groups 1, 5 and 7, then 2, 4 and 8, then 3, 6 and 9 as natural families, and reads pairs from different families as complementary or as needing more adjustment. It works best as a conversation about differences in style, not a verdict on a relationship.

Business name numerology applies the same letter chart to a company name, read as the character the name projects. Combining name and date of birth means setting your expression number beside your life path number, which comes from the full birth date; for the date side, see how to calculate your life path number.

When the name and date numbers agree, the name is read as supporting the path; when they differ, as adding a second set of tools. To see all five core numbers together, a free numerology reading lays them out side by side, and like any reading it is best used as a lens for self-reflection.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate your name number in numerology?

Write out your full birth name and give each letter its Pythagorean value: A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on, with the ninth letter and R at 9. Add the values, then reduce the total by adding its digits until one digit remains, unless you land on 11, 22 or 33, which are kept as master numbers. The result is your expression, or destiny, number.

Is the destiny number the same as the expression number?

Yes. Destiny number and expression number are two names for the same figure: the total of every letter in your full birth name, reduced. Some books use one term and some the other. It is different from the life path number, which comes from the birth date, although a few writers loosely call the life path a destiny number too, so check which calculation a source means.

Should you use your married name or birth name for numerology?

Use your full birth name for the core numbers, since numerology regards it as the original pattern. A married or chosen name is read as an additional influence, describing qualities you take on or emphasize while you use it. Comparing the two expression numbers shows what the newer name adds, without replacing what the birth name describes.

Can a master number appear in name numerology?

Yes. If any total, whether the full name, the vowels or the consonants, reduces to 11, 22 or 33 at the final step, most traditions keep it as a master number instead of reducing it to 2, 4 or 6. Whether an 11 inside a single part of the name counts is a matter of method, so note which approach a reading used.
